Internationalising the Operation of Spas in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia
The European Union Asia Invest Programme is a European community initiative that aims to promote and support business cooperation between the European Union and Asia.
This program approved a proposal submitted by the Spa Association of the Philippines (SAPi) to internationalise the operation of spas in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. The project has a total budget of Euro 1,018,197. The EU contribution will be Euro 578,197. Counterpart of Euro 439,993 will be provided by the partner organizations.
For this two year project, SAPi partners with the Confederation of International Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (CIBTAC), Association of Malaysian Spas (AMSPA), Bali Spa and Wellness Association (BSWA) and the Thai Spa Association (TSPA).

Strategic Review and Planning Workshop in Bangkok
The project “Internationalising the Operation of Spas in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia” conducted a strategic review and planning workshop last February 16-18 at the Courtyard Marriott Bangkok in Thailand.
The objective of the planning workshop were: to review the achievements, problems encountered, and lessons learned from the past year and to discuss future directions and recommendations for project implementation for the remaining project duration.
The project staff and officers oF SAPI who attended the planning workshop were the following: Jomar Fleras (Project Manager), Marjorie Lopingco (President), Cathy Turvill (Vice-President), Michael Turvill (Member), Cherryl Kho (Assistant Project Manager), Ellen Aguila (Accountant) and Gertie (Project Coordinator).
The attendees from the Thai Spa Association (TSPA) were Andrew Jacka (President), Napalai Cain (Education Committee) and Nissara Hamloha (Project Coordinator). Regine Winkler (Project Coordinator) and Lulu Widjaja (Executive Committee) represented the Bali Spa and Wellness Association (BSWA) while Joanne Bruce (Educaiton Committee) was the representative form the Association of Malaysian Spas (AMSPA). Ameena Cott (Education Manager) was also present to represent the Confederation of International Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (CIBTAC) and Jacqueline Le Sueur represented the sia Pacific Spa and Wellness Coalition (APSWC).
Johan Snicjkers from the Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippine and Reinhard Petry from the European Spas Association (ESPA) also attended the three-day Strategic Planning Workshop where each implementing partners presented their progress report and the challenges they have encountered during implementation.
Welcome Dinner for partners of the EU Asia-Invest project
A dinner was held for the partners and beneficiaries of the project “Internationalising the Operation of Spas in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia”. The agenda of the dinner were to welcome the participants of the Strategic Planning Workshop and to start the three-day activity.
Andrew Jacka, President of TSPA gave a welcome message and introduce the guests and partners followed by Napalai Cain who shared her experience in conducting the Train the Trainers training program. Jomar Fleras, project manager, presented the updates of the project and Johan Snicjkers, representative from the European Commission in the Philippines, gave a short message.
CIBTAC students from Thailand and a representative from the travel operators of Thailand also attended the said dinner.
2nd batch of CIBTAC training currently on-going in the Philippines & Thailand
SAPI & TSPA started the 2nd batch of CIBTAC training last January 12 and February 2, 2009 respectively. For the Philippines, there are 27 spa therapists and 15 spa therapists for Thailand who composed the 2nd batch. Since the Spa Professionals International Development Center (SPIDC) is still the only CIBTAC accredited school in the Philippines, the 2nd batch of training will still be held at SPIDC. While for Thailand, Chiva-Som International Academy was again chosen to conduct the CIBTAC training. The CIBTAC training would run for a month for both Thailand and the Philippines.
BSWA conducted Cascade Train the Trainers Training program
The Bali Spa and Wellness Association conducted the Cascade Train the Trainers training program to 18 CIBTAC-trained spa therapists last January 20-22, 2009. The three day course was designed to assist successful graduates of the Asia Invest CIBTAC training program to develop competencies in designing and conducting the Cascade Therapist Training Program (CTTP).
TSPA, SAPI & AMSPA started In-house cascade training
The three spa associations which conducted the cascade train the trainers training program last quarter of 2008 have started the conduct of the in-house cascade training to at least 20 spa therapists in each spa establishments.
In Thailand, the in-house cascade training were conducted in small groups of 2-3 students/spa therapists per session to facilitate their work schedule while in the Philippines it is being conducted with at least 20 participants in 2-3 hours per session per day.
