HEALTH TOURISM MASTERCLASS

with Dr László Puczkó, RLA’s Director of Industry Intelligence

Health-motivated travellers are looking for trips with a rather wide spectrum of aims and objectives. Guests can look for curing or improving certain medical conditions, taking part in rehabilitation programmes or rebalancing their mind and soul. The associated terms and concepts that can initiate a health travel range from cure, healing, rejuvenation, prevention, rehabilitation to wellness, wellbeing, holism and even fun! The concept of health tourism is the umbrella term for the subtypes: wellness tourism and medical tourism. Health tourism covers wide spectrum of services from hospitals, through thermal facilities, to wellness resort or medical hotels.

We now have to look at the world as an increasingly borderless global healthcare marketplace. Countries as well as developers are now investing billions of dollars to expand their health provision. Destinations, spas, hospitals, hotels and resorts are all looking for competitive value propositions to serve the growing international health traveller segment.

The key challenge to any developer, operator, destination, municipality or government is to understand the viable value proposition their destination and/or health-oriented facility can play in the international health tourism market, i.e. medical, wellness, recreational or even heritage tourism?

During the Masterclass we discuss the key elements that every destination or facility having interests in health tourism must consider for success.

The key topics to be discussed are as follows:

  • Health motivation: where do your resources and assets fit?
  • Lessons learned from 5th International Wellness, Spa and Travel Monitor benchmark data: trends and experiences, e.g. thermal facilities vs. other wellness and spa facilities
  • Planning for a health tourism destination: steps and objectives. Role of municipalities and governments.
  • How to map impacts of health tourism?
  • How to determine the most advantageous mix of concepts to meet, anticipate and drive the asset and marketplace demands both in wellness and medical tourism based on your resources?

The masterclass will build on the study that was led by Laszlo Puczko (Resources for Leisure Assets) for the World Tourism Organizatiom (UNWTO) and the European Travel Commission (ETC). The UNWO and the ETC have been well aware of the growth of health, wellness and medical tourism in recent years, describing it as ‘an emerging, global, complex and rapidly changing’ segment.  To provide clarity and consistency on definitions for health, wellness and medical tourism, UNWTO and ETC commissioned a study in the sector, which was prepared by Dr László Puczkó, RLA’s Director of Industry Intelligence, Melanie Smith (Budapest Metropolitan University), in collaboration with LaingBuisson, publishers of IMTJ.  The resulting report, ‘Exploring Health Tourism’ is the first attempt by a global tourism association to establish a coherent concept of health tourism and define the motivations behind travellers looking for health-related services. It gives established and emerging health travel destinations a practical toolkit to help measure, diversify and increase revenue from this sector, and tackle the seasonality of general tourism. Read the report’s Executive Summary and Overview of topics covered.

We believe that this Master Class provides the guidance and directions those responsible to capitalize on the developing and improving health tourism related services, brands and organizations.
