Spa and Wellness operators are one of the key wellness stakeholders who are providing the preventive healthcare, creating jobs through the whole value chain, adding economical value, and ending poverty.    

End Poverty in all its forms everywhere (SDG No.1), Gender Equality and women’s empowerment (SDG No.5) are just two of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) that the spa and wellness industry through its employment practices is already addressing.   Paying an above minimum wage to a work force that is predominantly women, while empowering women to take leadership roles in our industry is part of our ongoing commitment to doing our part to ensure that “no one is left behind”.  There are plenty of other opportunities for us to improve and play our part as spa and wellness operators are valuable partners for a healthier and more sustainable future.  

The goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They have been ratified by 193 countries with a target implementation date of 2030, so the clock is running.  All 17 Goals address the global challenges we face and are interconnected in order to leave no one behind. 

In 2019 the Asia Pacific Spa & Wellness Coalition (APSWC) partnered with the Agricultural and Food Marketing Association for Asia and the Pacific (AFMA), the association to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization to develop and endorse the sustainable business operation which is relevant for the spa and wellness industry.

By participating in this program and adhering to the seven goals that it covers it provides a basis for operators to benefit from the standards and marketing opportunities that participation provides.  Improved and more thoughtful recruitment practices, reinforcement of best HR practices for the team, and educating them in resources available to them to assist in their personal and professional growth will help build a more sustainable team.  Increased knowledge as regards water consumption, opportunities for economic growth with best business practices, and being more aware of responsible consumption practices will also help with the bottom-line management.
